CHAPTER NINETEEN

The Scarred Man pulled onto the shoulder of the interstate and let out a curse as he banged his fist against the steering wheel. Some sad country song was playing on the radio, and it only made his mood worse.

It was after one.

Late. Too late. From now until morning, the interstate was dead. If he saw twenty cars on this road between now and sun-up, it would be a lot. People just didn’t travel around here during the witching hours, if they didn’t have to. And young women, alone? No. That was a snowball’s chance in hell.

He was too late. He’d missed his opportunity.

He lit up a cigarette and rolled down the window, letting the cold night air brace the mottled skin of his cheeks. Taking a drag, he tried to calm his shaking fingers by wrapping them around the dial and switching the radio to a more upbeat tune.

He found Billy Rae Cyrus’s “Achy Breaky Heart,” and kept that on, tapping his fingers on the dash. It helped, but not enough.

That was how he got, when he thought about taking his next victim. He was so excited, he could barely keep it contained. But knowing that he’d have to wait until morning made him feel like dirt. It was like a drug, and he needed his next fix.

But he still had to be smart about it. That last kill had happened too fast. He needed to stretch it out. He couldn’t keep taking girl after girl, only to squander each opportunity. First of all, finding young girls who were traveling alone at night was no easy task. And secondly, the more he took, the wiser the police would get. He had to be careful, this time, which was why he hadn’t wanted to wait until morning. There’d be more people out, then. More chances of getting caught.

He took a few more puffs of his cigarette, hoping that it would calm him enough so he could call it a day, go back to his house in Story Creek and then try again, tomorrow night.

No such luck. He had it in his veins. A hunger. A need. No way would he be able to wait that long.

He’d stay out here all night, if he had to. He’d take whatever risk he needed to.

Good thing the police around these parts were absolutely worthless.

But as worthless as they were, they would be on his tail, soon. He’d killed two girls in the area, so far. They were probably looking for him, now, the bumbling idiots. Thumbs up their asses, trying to figure out where he’d strike next. It’d take them a while, but they’d catch up with him. Eventually, he’d have to move on. Farther down the road. Maybe to South Dakota.

Right now, though?

Just one more. If he had one more, he’d be sated. He’d just take her tonight. Keep her until morning, until her screams died down and she had a false sense of security. Usually, that was what happened. Frantic at first, they calmed down, only to freak out once more when they realized the end was near.
